If you thought a cinema powered entirely by the sun was a crazy idea, then think again. With the help of you, the players of People’s Postcode Lottery, a Swansea based charity has brought this ambitious and green idea to life. The Undercurrents Foundation received over £4,000 funding from People’s Postcode Trust to renovate the Sol Cinema – a unique and environmental cinema, powered entirely by solar panels. The cinema has been a huge hit already with its quirky design and dinky but cute size.

With our Spring Postcode Millions landing in Port Talbot, the Sol Cinema made the trip over to the town to let our local players see the cinema and find out how your funding is making a huge difference to local communities. Though it looks small, the cinema can comfortably accommodate eight adults and shows a series of short, environmental films.
The funding from People’s Postcode Trust was used to overhaul the cinema before it embarks on a tour of five events, between April and June 2012. The Undercurrents Foundation was formed in 1993 and aims to use video and film as a medium to bring about positive environment and social change. The cinema acts as a practical display of what can be achieved using renewable energy – what a simple but effective idea!

ONE of the world's smallest cinemas has gone green - using a giant solar panel to power its films. The tiny Sol Cinema in Wales is one of the world's smallest movie theatres and runs out of a caravan. It has an usherette, red carpet and can seat eight people.
Projectionist Paul O'Connor, said: "It's just like Dr Who's tardis really - people step inside and it takes them to another world. That's the power of film. "We are very keen on the movie-going experience, just because it's a tiny cinema doesn't mean you can't have the big screen treatment. "That's why we have a red carpet and an usherette to clip your tickets and show you to your seats. "It's just something that makes it a bit more memorable."

The Sol Cinema, built and run by Swansea arts charity Undercurrents, is competing against arts groups from across Britain in this year's Epic Awards.The awards are run by Voluntary Arts, the national development agency for arts participation.

Built in 2010, the Sol Cinema is a mini-movie house powered entirely by the sun.The converted 1960s caravan comes with a red carpet, and usherette.It has a full library of comedy, music videos and short films with various environmental themes.Accommodating eight adults, the tiny theatre has proved very popular at schools and events across Swansea and Wales.

In 2010 the cinema won the Network Wales award for best communications project and was a finalist in the Big Lottery Awards 2011.Cinema projectionist Paul O'Connor said: "We are excited at being a finalist for yet another award. The Sol Cinema is an entertaining and practical example of how we can be using renewable energy.

"We hope the public will vote for us by clicking the green thumbs up for the Epic Award."
